Fire In Garbage Transfer Station In Roslyn Was 2nd This Week

This one was on West Shore Road.

ROSLYN, NY — The second local fire at a garbage transfer station this week took place on West Shore Road overnight.

Firefighters dispatched for a fire of unknown type were met by a smoke condition on West Shore Road, Chief of Department Ronald E. Collura Jr., Rescue Hook & Ladder Co. 1 of Roslyn, told Patch Friday morning.

Garbage fires are always difficult, in part because you don't know what's burning, he said. "It's always an extended operation, it could be deep-seated; you have to pull everything out and reach every hot spot."

Roslyn was helped by firefighters from neighboring departments including Port Washington, Mineola, Glenwood and Seacliff, he said.

Officials await a report on the fire's cause and origin from Nassau County, he said. "They're very good, they always reach out when their investigation is complete and let us know."
