PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Halloween has finally arrived, and as clowns, pirates, vampires and minions flood schools and offices Thursday, parents have asked whether rain will force kids to wait another day to trick-or-treat.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Halloween on Long Island. In Port Washington, showers were likely before 2 p.m. Thursday, along with patches of fog, winds up to 18 mph, and gusts up to 29 mph. Showers were also likely Thursday night, along with a possible thunderstorm after 11 p.m., winds up to 26 mph and gusts up to 48 mph.

The forecast led some in the community to ask whether that would mean trick-or-treating is canceled or delayed this year. Patch reached out to each village. Here's what they said.

Baxter Estates: We don't get involved in that and we haven't heard anything from anyone in the community. Usually parents who want to change trick-or-treating hours organize within their own groups.

Flower Hill: We don't have any official event or anything like that with the Village of Flower Hill. Generally kids go out in groups with their peers or, if they're younger, with a parent or two. But we as a village have nothing scheduled or planned.

As Robert Rockelein put it: "Weather-permitting, get out there, get home and dry off!"

Manorhaven: We don't have anything [a delay] in place but there is a curfew that you can find on our website. The "Halloween Juvenile Curfew Law," as its called, says that from 7 p.m. Oct. 30 through 6 a.m. Oct. 31, and from 7 p.m. Oct. 31 through 6 a.m. Nov. 1, kids can't be in any public place or on private property other than their own home without permission from the owner. Exceptions include when the child is with a parent or guardian, running an emergency errand, has a written and signed directive from a parent to be on a specific business or activity, working a job, or in a vehicle with a parent's permission.

Port Washington North: We're not doing anything. We're not saying it's delayed or anything. If people want to go out, they go out. We aren't doing anything with that.

Sands Point: No, we don't usually do anything like that. Usually the houses are so far apart we don't get many trick-or-treaters. They go elsewhere.

As for the popular House of the Undead, a nonprofit haunted house in Salem, Kristina Bresnick told community members in a Facebook post the local haunt will be postponed to Friday.

"We're just concerned about all of the electrical that goes into it and stuff with all of the rain" she wrote. The house is operated by volunteers.

As Patch previously reported, Kristina and Michael Bresnick convert their home into a free haunted house experience while simultaneously raising money for a different cause each year. This year, the Bresnick family is raising money for the North Shore Animal League.
