North Hempstead Animal Shelter Opens: Top Dogs Up For Adoption
Meet Diego and Napoleon, two top dogs looking for loving homes. Will they be with you?

NORTH HEMPSTEAD, NY — The North Hempstead Animal Shelter is open for residents to adopt furry friends looking for a loving home.
The town animal shelter is open by appointment and has several dogs up for adoption, town officials reminded residents. Featured pups include Diego and Napoleon.
Diego is one of the longest residents at the shelter, coming in as a stray in 2014, but he doesn't let that get him down. He is a happy, dapper gentleman that loves to go for walks and chase the ball, and he also likes to snuggle up for some petting. Diego loves all people he meets but would have to be the only pet in the house, the shelter said. Check out this episode of “Love on a Leash” featuring Diego.

And Napoleon, another top dog, is a sweet and easy-going senior boy who wants nothing but to spend his golden years in the sun next to his forever companion. Napoleon originally came to the shelter as a stray in 2015 and quickly stole all of our hearts. He was adopted into loving home, but sadly, his owner passed away early this year, and Napoleon was returned to the shelter’s care. Napoleon is friendly with all people he meets but would like to be the only pet in the home.

The North Hempstead Animal Shelter is located at 75 Marino Avenue in Port Washington and is open Monday through Fridays (except holidays) 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, appointments are required. For more information on a featured dog or to make an appointment, please call 311 or 516-869-6311.
