Police on Lookout for Dangerous Drivers

Police are cracking down on dangerous driving on two fronts. 

In Port Washington, the police district is participating in a selective traffic enforcement program, partially funded through a grant from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

In this initiative, police aim "to reduce unsafe driving,” notes Lt. Brian Staley, commanding officer of patrol, who will supervise the programm which runs through Sept. 30.

Police will be watching for those in violation of traffic laws, including those who:

• Speed
• Pass Red Lights
• Disobey Traffic Control Devices – Stop Signs, U-Turns, No Turn on Red etc.
• Fail to yield right of way
• Practice unsafe passing or lane usage
• Fail to signal
• Follow too closely
• Drive while impaired

And across Nassau County, police are participating in a New York State “STOP-DWI” grant that will allocate additional officers to conduct an extensive DWI enforcement initiative on Tuesday and Wednesday, during the July Fourth celebration.

Meanwhile in Port Washington, police say they are committed to traffic safety, maintaining a traffic safety enforcement unit with officers on the lookout for speeding and those who drive while intoxicated, as well as those who violate truck inspection laws. 

This effort, police say, reinforces the message that aggressive and unsafe driving will not be tolerated.
