Port Washington Children Center Students ‘Eat the Rainbow’
Colorful, Hands-On Nutrition Lesson Teaches Students About Sensory Exploration, Making Healthy Choices and More
Students at the Port Washington Children’s Center recently took part in a vibrant and educational activity called “Eat the Rainbow.” The hands-on lesson blended healthy eating, sensory exploration, and early learning in one delicious experience.
Designed to introduce children to healthy food choices in a fun and engaging way, Eat the Rainbow activity focused on the idea that eating a variety of colorful fruits helps us grow strong and healthy. Students learned about “putting rainbows in our bellies,” a playful concept that connects colorful foods to building strong bodies and active brains.
“This activity brought together play, learning, and nutrition,” said Christine Paige, the executive director of the Children’s Center. “The children had fun exploring fruits of every color, and in the process, developed critical skills and built healthy habits.”

Throughout the lesson, children practiced important early childhood skills, including color and number recognition. Each child identified the color of their fruit, matched similar colors, and counted pieces as they prepared their snack.
Using child-safe tools, the children also practiced their fine motor skills by cutting fruit into small pieces, promoting independence and hand-eye coordination. The experience also included sensory exploration as students explored the textures, smells, and tastes of various fruits, encouraging curiosity and building confidence around food.

The Eat the Rainbow lesson has become a staple at the center since it was launched a few years ago by PWCC Teacher Ms. Antonietta, who has been with center for over five years. This nutritious and exciting activity is one of many programs at Port Washington Children’s Center that highlights the Center’s commitment to whole-child development, supporting growth through playful learning, hands-on experiences, and a focus on physical and emotional wellness.
