Port Washington Couple's Kids Book Explains New Normal In Schools

A Port Washington couple penned a new children's book to help children understand why classrooms will look very differently this year.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Two Port Washington parents, including a former Board of Education candidate, have penned a new children's book that they hope will help children adjust to a new normal.

Lauren and Adam Block wrote "Kelly Goes Back to School: More Science on the Coronavirus." The book outlines changes kids will see in the classroom, such as masks, and strict social distancing.

"Our hope is that by helping kids and families to understand why we're doing what we're doing that everyone will have an easier time following all of the new rules and protocols going back to school," Lauren Block, a primary care physician and associate professor of medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine, told WABC-TV.

Adam Block, a health economist and assistant professor of public health at New York Medical College, told Newsday he was inspired after finding little on the subject appropriate for their children, ages 7 and 4.

"I couldn’t help noticing there was nothing to read them to explain what was going on in their lives right now," he told the newspaper. "I mean, I love reading them books about dinosaurs, but it doesn’t have much relevance."
