PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Port Washington Schools' baseball and softball teams are partnering on Saturday, April 30 to fundraise for the American Cancer Society.

The boys' baseball teams team will face off at three levels, all playing against the Mineola Mustangs. Eighth graders will start at 9:30 a.m., the varsity baseball team will play at 12:30 p.m., and the junior varsity team will begin their game at 4:15 p.m., according to district officials.

The varsity softball team will also face off against Mineola, at 1:30 p.m., which — according to Schreiber High School coach Eric Sutz — is "an exciting day to play a game with a higher purpose."

The annual tradition of Strike Out Cancer started in 2011, when Sutz thought of bringing the national movement to a local level. It was during that time that a fellow coach's mother passed away from cancer.

"We wanted to contribute to the American Cancer Society and to teach the girls there is a bigger sense of responsibility," said Sutz. "It's not just about playing but giving back to the community."
