Traveling Vietnam Memorial Replica Comes To Port Washington
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Moving Wall, a half-size replica of D.C.'s monument, is in Port Washington through Sunday, Oct. 17.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — A half-size replica of Washington, D.C.'s Vietnam Veterans Memorial can now be seen in Port Washington for a limited time.
State and local officials gathered Friday morning at North Hempstead Beach Park, where they welcomed the arrival of the traveling monument. "The Moving Wall," as it's called, pays tribute to the more than 58,000 men and women who lost their lives in the war, which started in 1961 and ended in 1975 for the U.S.
The wall is located at the North Lot of North Hempstead Beach Park (175 W. Shore Rd.) and will be viewable 24 hours a day through Sunday, Oct. 17.

"Many of my childhood friends did not come home from Vietnam so this wonderful traveling memorial holds special meaning in my heart," said State Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove). "Those who fought did so with the best of intentions — despite not being fully supported by the government that sent them or by its citizens. The valor, duty, and sacrifice of those brave men and women (are) unquestioned."
This moving tribute, in every sense of the word, has brought the experience of the District's original memorial to people who could not travel to the nation's capital. It first went on display in Tyler, Texas, in October 1984, and since has been traveling the country from April to November.
