We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one resident who is having an impact in Port Washington.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Jag Walia, who nominated their son Mehar, of Port Washington.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

When Mehar was a little boy, he dreamed of becoming president of the United States. He has always shown leadership qualities since his young age.

Curriculum: Mehar is currently in 11th grade, and is an excellent honor student, taking over four AP courses, and excelling in each and every one of them. His report cards have mostly A's, and A+ grades. He maintains above a 4.0 GPA in his school. He scored 1475 on the first SAT that he took, and is preparing for the second one in March, and hopes to perform with an even better score.

Extracurricular Activities: When Mehar was a freshman in high school, he started playing wrestling in the winter and football in the fall of 2021. He was such a fast learner that even though it was his first time ever playing both sports that year, he won the "Coach's Award for JV Wrestling" and the "Coach's Award for JV Football" in 2021. Due to his excellent mentoring and leadership skills, he was made a captain of the football team, and the wrestling team JV team.

Mehar belongs to the Key Club and volunteers in different places such as the Science Museum of Long Island, The Sands Point Preserve and more. His duties include setting up for the day, handing out brochures, and being a tour guide.

Mehar belongs to the "Re-Wild Organization," where he plants vegetables and fruits, and takes care of them many times in the month. Those locally grown vegetables and fruits are then donated to needy families of Long Island.

Mehar belongs to the United Nations Club in his school. This club meets many weekends in different schools of Long Island, and discuss and debate various issues affecting the world, such as poverty, racism, world economics and homelessness. Mehar has been awarded "Best Delegate" twice consecutively due to his excellent debating and his speech giving abilities, and "Second Best Delegate" once during these all day debate events.

In conclusion, Mehar is truly a leader in every possible way. He is a great mentor to his peers. Following his footsteps, many of his peers have also joined various organizations that he belongs to. I believe he has a very bright future ahead, and he is truly a New York star!

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

He is a great mentor with amazing leadership qualities!

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Mehar!
