5 Things: Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday, Sandy Benefit and Author Talk With Leonard Lopate

Prospect Heights area information and events you won't want to miss.

 

1. Get to the Brooklyn Museum. Tonight is the night, because it's Target First Saturday. This month the results of the GO! contest will be displayed. Plus you can listen to live music, wander the galleries and get your monthly dose of live light projections. Bring items to donate for Sandy survivors. Most needed are baby diapers, wipes, and hand sanitizer, as well as classroom supplies such as construction paper, notebooks, pencils, and crayons. 5 to 9 p.m. at Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway. Free. 

2. Meet Leonard Lopate (and A.M. Holmes). As part of the library's Writer's in the City series, author AM Homes will chat with WNYC's Leonard Lopate about her new book, May We Be Forgiven. 4 p.m. at the Dweck Center at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library, located at 10 Grand Army Plaza. Free.

3. Try to make things better. Head to the discussion Occupy Brooklyn Preschool: Exploring How Opportunity Gap becomes Achievement Gap. Pacific Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, 4th Avenue and Pacific St., 2 p.m. Free. 

4. Get the kids out of the house. Head to the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library for Tales of Snow A wintertime collection of short stories and skits that incorporate masks, puppets, stories, songs and dance. Central Library, Dweck Performing Arts Center, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Free.

5. Do something different. Head to the Kirtan Soul Revival and Sandy Fundraiser where you can take part in an evening of devotional singing of Sanskrit mantras, original music, spirituals and traditional music from around the world. Shambhala Yoga & Dance Center, 367 St. Marks Ave., 8 p.m. Free, but a $10-$15 donation for Sandy relief is suggested.
