Crystal Hudson Wins Brooklyn District 35 City Council Race

Hudson will be the first openly gay Black woman to serve in City Council.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Crystal Hudson will represent Brooklyn's 35th District in City Council, according to projected election results.

Hudson— who beat out seven other candidates in the Democratic primary for the district in June — was declared the projected winner of the general election by the New York Times and NY1 about an hour after polls closed on Tuesday.

She held almost 95 percent of the vote, according to the city's Board of Elections, which had nearly 98 percent of precincts reporting as of Wednesday morning.

A former staffer for current 35th District City Council Member Laurie Cumbo and the Public Advocate, Hudson will be the first openly gay Black woman to serve in City Council.

“As a third-generation Brooklynite and lifelong resident of the 35th district, this community made me who I am, and I am honored to have the opportunity to represent my neighbors on the City Council," Hudson said in a statement.

Hudson's opponent, Regina Kinsey, held just 5 percent of the vote, according to the unofficial results.

Hudson and Kinsey faced each other on the ballot for a second time. Kinsey first ran in the Democratic primary, but opted to run in the general election under the Common Sense party line.

The 35th District includes Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights and parts of Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy.
