BROOKLYN, NY — As if blooming pink trees weren't enough to entice a visit, visitors to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden can now celebrate the iconic cherry blossom season with pop-up music and dance performances.

The garden has set up a special "Weekends in Bloom" installment of its Art in the Garden series, which welcomes visitors throughout the gardens with surprise music, dances, crafts and other family activities.

The events, which will run each Saturday until May 7, come as the garden's cherry trees reach their full bloom. Nearly all of the garden's more than 100 trees were in their peak bloom as of this week, according to the BBG Cherry Tracker.

The pop-up events will replace the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which has been put on hold since the coronavirus pandemic.

The cherry blossom season, which is usually at the start of the spring, kicks off hanami in Japan; a time for celebrating the beauty of the cherry trees, synonymous with picnics and time outdoors with friends and family.
