PROSPECT HEIGHTS, NY — The first cherry blossoms of spring have bloomed in Brooklyn, kicking off a bright seasonal tradition at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and other local parks.

The museum keeps tabs on its cherry blossoms with an interactive online tracker, which marks each tree's status from prebloom to post-peak bloom. As of Friday, two of the garden's over 200 cherry trees were in their first bloom and two more were in peak bloom.

The first blooms were spotted last week, the botanic garden announced on March 14.

"Over the next several weeks, the blossoms on BBG’s more than 200 flowering cherry trees will progress from buds to full flowers to falling petals across Cherry Esplanade, Cherry Walk, and the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden. Consisting of more than 20 cultivars, BBG’s cherry blossom collection is one of the most diverse of its kind in a U.S. botanic garden," the garden said in a news release.

The "Okame" flower is usually the first to bloom, followed by the weeping cherries in the Japanese Garden, according to to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The "Okame" flower's bud is a deep magenta color and the flowers bloom as a light pink.

Early blooms have also been spotted on the Upper West Side in Central Park, according to the Central Park Conservancy's cherry tracker.

At the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, the blossoms come with a long spring-time celebration. The last two weekends of April and first to of May will be a bloom party at the garden, complete with garden tours, music and dance performances, workshops for kids and more — all on the backdrop of the blooming cherry blossoms.

Guests can also spend an evening in the tree collection with music, food and drinks at two ticketed events on April 25 and 26. For more information on the events, visit this link.

In Brooklyn, cherry blossoms can also be spotted at McCarren Park between Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Green-Wood Cemetery in Park Slope and Prospect Park between Prospect Heights and Park Slope, according to Untapped New York.
