BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — J'Ouvert and the West Indian Day Parade returned to the streets of New York City Monday after a two-year hiatus spurred by a global pandemic.

Throngs of people came out to celebrate J’Ouvert, a street party that commemorates freedom from slavery, in Prospect Lefferts Gardens before the parade in Crown Heights.

Outbreaks of violence have marred J'Ouvert in the past, but the Associated Press reports Monday's event was appears to have been peaceful.
