P.L.A.N.T. in Crown Heights Wins Urban Garden Award: NYT

The plants from the Lincoln Place garden are said to have a cooling effect on the block, according to the New York Times report.

CROWN HEIGHTS, NY — Dozens of people were out in Crown Heights celebrating the win for Preserving Lincoln’s Abundant Natural Treasures, an urban gardening group in Lincoln Place, on Wednesday at a press conference.

P.L.A.N.T. was the recipient of the Greenest Block in Brooklyn award from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, reported the New York Times.

The plants in the garden, which is located at Norstrand and New York avenues, is even said to cool the block, according to the New York Times.

During the press conference, one official said that there should be more urban gardens to cool the area like P.L.A.N.T., especially with the this year’s record breaking heat wave.

The urban garden includes a butterfly bush, elephant ears, gardenias, roses, a rose of Sharon and a Creeping Jenny, to name a few, according to the NYT report.

P.L.A.N.T. beat out 99 other entrants from 26 other neighborhoods, representatives from the botanical garden told NYT.
