ICYMI: Protest Planned Against 'Gentrifying' Bar With Fake Bullet Holes

Crown Heights residents aren't done with Summerhill.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Crown Heights residents aren’t done with Summerhill, the new bar that took a swarm of criticism for advertising fake "bullet holes" and selling 40-ounce rosé from brown paper bags.

Another protest is planned outside of the bar on Sunday for what organizers say are broken promises made by owner Becca Brennan.

"Her intention was not to repair anything but the credibility of her establishment," a Facebook event for the protest says. "Let's wake folks up about where they're putting their dollars and remind people that this woman hasn't changed anything about what we grieved over almost a month ago."

The consternation over Summerhill started last month, when the bar put out a press release for "Crown Heights' most Instagrammable, 'let’s just crush some watermelon cocktails' hangout."

In advertising the interior, the release adds, "(Yes, that bullet hole-ridden wall was originally there and, yes, we’re keeping it.)"

Brennan, though, later admitted to Gothamist that the holes in the wall were probably just from construction.

"I don't have any backup to that, but when you think about it as a joke like, yep, that's a bullet hole," she told Gothamist.

That didn’t sit well with Crown Heights, ground zero for some of the city’s high-profile gentrification fights where luxury condo towers are forcing long-time residents farther out in Brooklyn.

A sizeable crowd showed up to protest, and Brennan released an apologetic statement through a publicist.

"I deeply apologize for any offense that my recent comments might have caused," the statement said. "I did not intend to be insensitive to anyone in the neighborhood, and I am sorry that my words have caused pain. I made light of serious issues and that was wrong."

The neighborhood apparently hasn’t taken the apology well. The Facebook event has 31 people who said they are going and other 99 who are "interested."

And organizers are promising new damaging information about the owner and her associates.

"On Sunday, we will reveal further information about Becky's associates and the kind of company she surrounds herself with and expose just how much damage these people, Becky included, cause to communities of color," the event page says. "We will also use this as a community canvassing event, to inform people within the community of next steps and continue to spread the word. Let's keep her out of business and make sure she feels it where it hurts. #byebyebecky #boycottsummerhill #bummerhill"
