Tyreke Borel, East Flatbush Teen, Is 1 of 2 Killed at Brooklyn's J'Ouvert Festival
The 17-year-old's mom says she warned him to be safe before he left home that night.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Police have identified the second person killed near this year's J'Ouvert celebration as 17-year-old East Flatbush resident Tyreke Borel.
The NYPD said they responded to a 911 call at 3:50 a.m. Monday reporting a man and woman shot near Empire Boulevard and Flatbush Avenue.
Responding officers found Borel with a gunshot wound to the chest, the NYPD said. He was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning, and an investigation into the shooting was ongoing.
Borel's mother, Alima St. Clair, told the New York Daily News that her son was "just a lovely child who wanted to enjoy the Labor Day."

"I told him to be safe," she said. "But he's 17. He didn't want to stay home."
St. Clair said police informed her that Borel had been sitting on a bench alone when he was shot, the paper reported, adding that he was not believed to have been the shooter's target.
"I can't believe this sleep easy Ty we love you," wrote a friend on Borel's Facebook page, one of many tributes posted there. "I can't believe this I'm glad I'm one of the last people u saw and we had a calm convo lastnight I can't wait to meet you again."
The Daily News reported that Borel had three siblings and will be buried in Trinidad, where he was born. He came to New York City four years ago, according to the News.
Borel was one of two people shot dead Monday in the vicinity of the J'Ouvert parade route. Tiarah Poyau, a 22-year-old student at St. John’s University from East New York, was killed just after 4 a.m. in front of 44 Empire Blvd., police said.
Additionally, a 72-year-old woman was shot in the arm in the same incident that took the life of Borel. She was listed in stable condition by police. And shortly before 7 a.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg at Rogers Avenue and Clarkson Avenue.
The NYPD significantly increased its police presence at this year's J'Ouvert celebration, following the 2015 shooting death of Andrew Cuomo aide Carey Gabay. Earlier this year, three men were charged with murder in connection to Gabay's killing.
Anyone with information on the shooting that took the life of either Tyrele Borel or Tiarah Poyau can confidentially report it using the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers website or by anonymously calling the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
