Here are the top stories in Queens today:
- A 12-year-old boy was stabbed by a pal as the two played in a playground by a Queens public school Thursday afternoon, police and education sources said. One of the preteens stabbed the other at about 3 p.m. in the playground in Jamaica next to the Emerson School, which shares a campus with the Richard Grossley Junior High School on 167th St., sources said. The injured boy ran into the school building, while the other boy fled, sources said. Medics took the injured boy to an area hospital. His condition was not immediately known. (New York Daily News)
- Queens Public Library President and CEO Dennis Walcott announced on Thursday, Oct. 21, that QPL will be supplying more than 255 internet-enabled hotspots for visitors that don’t have internet access at home at Lefrak City, South Jamaica, Astoria, and Long Island City branches. These underserved communities will now have Wi-Fi hotspots thanks to Sterling National Bank, National Grid, and the Thomas & Jeanne Elmezzi Private Foundation for their generous donations of $85,000 to the library. - An American Airlines flight from New York’s Kennedy Airport to Santa Ana, California made an emergency landing in Denver tonight after a passenger attacked a flight attendant. The airline said American Airlines Flight 976 was diverted to Denver after the altercation. There the plane landed safely and the unknown suspect has been arrested. (Amico Hoops)
- Cops released a video on Thursday showing a gunman opening fire at a Queens gas station, wounding three men as they ran for their lives. An argument broke out outside the Mobil station on Beach Channel Drive near Beach 38th St. in the Rockaways about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, cops said. The victims, a 32-year-old man struck in the groin and both feet, a 35-year-old man shot in the chest, and a 36-year-old man blasted in the left shin, were all taken to local hospitals in stable condition, officials said. - Cyclists who pass through Oakland Gardens now have over two miles of new bike lanes to use. On Friday, Oct. 22, the Department of Transportation, elected officials, and civic leaders celebrated the unveiling of the bike lane along 73rd Avenue, which connects serves as the most direct connection between Cunningham Park and Alley Pond Park and has become a popular route for cyclists traveling to the Eastern Queens Greenway.
