Here are the top stories today in Queens:
- Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that 19-year-old Lawayne Smalls has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree for a Sept. 8, 2020, shooting that killed one man and injured two others. Smalls, of Beach 26th Street in Far Rockaway, Queens, pleaded before Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder and will be sentenced on Dec. 3, 2021. Justice Holder indicated he will order the defendant to prison for 23 years, to be followed by five years' post release supervision. (Press Release Desk)
- A memorial service was held Friday morning to pay tribute to the victims of American Airlines Flight 587, which crashed in Belle Harbor 20 years ago. The Airbus A300 was headed to the Dominican Republic but crashed after takeoff from JFK International Airport, killing all 260 people on board and five people on the ground, making it the second-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history. The memorial is situated beside the Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk at the south end of Beach 116th Street and was dedicated on Nov. 12, 2006, the fifth anniversary of the accident. (WABC-TV)
- NYPD are looking for woman who allegedly whacked an on-duty officer in the head with a shoe at a Queens restaurant. According to police, the attack took place after the officer responded to Chubby Burgers & Chicken in Astoria for a disturbance among a “disorderly crowd” inside the location around 3 a.m. on Sunday. The officer suffered pain and bruising to his forehead and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition. (New York Post )
- There are plenty of fun events happening this weekend around Queens, including live music, volunteer events, hikes, and more. On Friday, visit Queens County Farm for an Autumn Dance Celebration, which will feature performances from eight Indian Nations. On Sunday, head to the Flushing Meadows Corona Park for a World’s Fair History Walk led by the Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park and learn about the dozen remaining World’s Fair structures, monuments, and sculptures. - Two Queens airports made the list of The 10 U.S. Airports With The Most Flight Delays And Cancelations. Data shows that 23 percent of flights traveling into LaGuardia are late or canceled, making the airport number two on the list. Tied at number 10 with San Francisco International, JFK arrivals are late or cancelled 18.79 percent of the time. (TravelAwaits)
