Here are the top stories today in Queens:

  1. A driver was severely injured after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a wooden utility pole on Monday night. The 32-year-old man was driving his Honda Pilot eastbound on Rockaway Boulevard, near 111th Street in the South Ozone Park area when he lost control and crashed into the pole, splitting the car in half and visibly snapping the pole. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital with severe injuries to his head and body. (WPIX 11 New York)
  2. Flushing is getting a new movie theater with seven screens and a 4DX theater this weekend. The Regal Tangram 4DX theater, located at 133-36 37th Avenue, will feature motion-synchronized seats with the ability to vibrate and blow wind, fog, rain, snow, bubbles, and scents. The theater will be the first of its kind in Queens and the first movie theater opening in downtown Flushing in 35 years. (Time Out New York)
  3. The Queens man who was convicted of threatening to kill Democratic lawmakers is seeking mercy from the court through his ‘Prison Comics’ featuring R. Kelly. Attorneys for 37-year-old Brendan Hunt, a former court employee from Ridgewood, have argued that Hunt is no longer a threat to society, offering as proof a comic book he drew while behind bars depicting himself and the disgraced rap star working out and doing yoga while serving as bunkmates. Federal prosecutors are neither amused by Hunt’s comics nor impressed by his attorneys’ claims of atonement. (AMNY)
  4. An organization's restaurant crawls are highlighting the Queens culinary scene and helping food banks. Bryan Lozano founded Homecoming NYC, a community organization working to support local restaurants and provide food security through restaurant crawls, after witnessing the community he grew up in burdened by financial hardships brought by the pandemic. Since the organization’s founding in May, Lozano and his team have led two food crawls in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, which have raised $5,000 in additional revenue for restaurants. (NBC New York)
  5. A 26-year-old man was stabbed to death on a Queens street on Monday night. Christopher Roche was knifed in the back during a confrontation on 89th Ave. near Merrick Blvd. in Jamaica and died at the scene, just a few blocks from where he lived. At least two men were taken into custody but charges were not immediately filed. (New York Daily News)
