Here are the top stories in Queens today:

  1. The 9-year-old who emptied her piggy bank for first responders received a COVID-19 vaccine in Queens. Desiree Mohammadi, the Long Island native who used her money to donate $52 for snacks for first responders back in May of 2020, was among some of the young children who received their first vaccine on Thursday. She was joined by her parents, as well as Sandra Lindsay, the Long Island nurse who was the first American to receive a COVID vaccine. (CBS New York)
  2. Two Queens entrepreneurs have been selected to showcase their businesses at the Winter Village in Bryant Park. As part of Bank of America’s Small Business Spotlight to empower entrepreneurs, Kalsang Pottery, Blue Paws Art, and two other NYC-based minority-owned businesses will be given a rent-free booth for two weeks each to reach new customers. Kalsang Pottery will have a booth from Nov. 15-26, and Blue Paws Art will be at the village from Dec. 13-Jan. 2. (Western Queens Gazette)
  3. Two teenagers were slashed during a brawl that took place about a block east of the entrance to Forest Hills High School. Officers responded to find a 15-year-old boy who suffered a puncture wound to his left hand, and a 14-year-old boy with a slash wound to his right arm. Cops recovered the 14-year-old male suspect near the crime scene as well as a switch blade allegedly used in the fight. (AMNY)
  4. Museum Of The Moving Image and Reverse Shot will present a new edition of See It Big, their signature series devoted to big-screen movie experiences, focused on films that push cinematic style into excess. See It Big: Extravaganzas! will be presented in two parts, with part one running from Nov. 5 through Dec. 19. All films will screen in the Redstone Theater or Bartos Screening Room at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. (Western Queens Gazette)
  5. 311 data shows there have been widespread missed garbage collections throughout Queens in 40 ZIP codes that encompass at least 29 neighborhoods. Many believe the slowdown or lack of services from the DSNY is a response to Mayor de Blasio’s vaccine mandate for city workers. De Blasio called the slowdown in services “unacceptable” and DSNY has declared that days off for sanitation workers have been canceled. Employees will be required to work a Sunday shift and will take on a 12-hour schedule as a means to create additional capacity for the workload. (Queens Chronicle)
