  1. A man was shot in broad daylight while walking across the street yesterday. According to police, the shooting occurred at 208th Street and 116th Avenue in Cambria Heights. Police were called to the scene around 3:10 p.m. The victim was shot in his hip and is in the hospital in critical but stable condition. As of Monday evening, the suspect has not been arrested. (New York Post )
  2. New York Teachers are scrambling to find opportunities after budget cuts eliminated many positions. Some teachers, like two who worked at a Brooklyn elementary school, have been moved from their eliminated position to a vacant position. The Chancellor of Schools David banks expects all teachers eliminated in this way to be re-hired in other positions. Despite the reassurances, teachers are still worried. Read more at the link.   3. An off-duty corrections officer is recovering after a shootout on Sunday night. According to police, the officer was attending a July 4th celebration on Jamaica Avenue when he saw someone displaying a firearm and shooting at a vehicle. The officer allegedly returned fire and shot the suspect three times in the body. A second person shot at the corrections officer and struck him once in the left leg. The officer was released from Manhasset Hospital early on Monday morning. (NBC New York)
