Cacti, Shorebirds And Canoeing: This Weekend in Queens
Learn about plants, animals, American history, how to canoe or how to weave.

QUEENS, NEW YORK – Sharpen your pencils and get back into the spirit of grade school, because this weekend in Queens is all about science and history education. Talks about endangered shorebirds, desert bioecology, revolutionary war spies and the history of the World’s Fair are coming to your borough this weekend. Take a peek at what’s on offer:

Neighborhood: Rockaway Beach
What: Listen to the sounds of live fiddle music as you swing your partner round and round.

Where: Beach 94th Street, off Shorefront Parkway
When: Friday 7 to 8:30 p.m.
What: A free showing of Jumanji in the park. Go for a walk along the water as the sun sets, then snuggle in with your family to watch Jumanji in the park after dark.
Where: Broad Channel Park, East 16th Road to East 18th Road on Cross Bay Boulevard
When: Friday 8 to 10 p.m.
Neighborhood: Rockaway Beach
What: Come learn about local endangered shorebirds during their peak nesting season.
Where: Beach 86th Street and Shorefront Parkway
When: Saturday 12 to 3 p.m.
Neighborhood: Jamaica
What: This is one of the most interesting and engaging events for kids this summer. Bring your little (or big) ones to learn about the Culper Spy Ring, a Revolutionary War spy ring that operated out of Long Island. Appropriate for ages three and up.
Where: King Manor Museum, King Rufus Park, 89 Ave. bet. 150 St. and 153 St.
When: Saturday 1 to 4 p.m.
Neighborhood: Flushing
What: Queens Botanical Garden is hosting tours of plants that can survive in different climates. This weekend, the Garden will give tours of cacti, succulents and other non-native plants that thrive in heat and arid environments. Then you can even make a terrarium of your own to bring home.
Where: Queens Botanical Garden, 43-50 Main Street, Flushing
When: Saturday 1 to 2 p.m.
Neighborhood: Flushing
What: The fabulous World’s Fair, which showcased nations’ greatest accomplishments across fields, was once held right here in Queens in 1964. Like the Olympics, a massive convention center was built for the event – the Unisphere. Come see the Unisphere itself and hear about the history of the cultural phenomenon.
Where: Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Whitestone Exwy. bet. 111 St. and College Point Blvd.
When: Sunday 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Neighborhood: Bayside
What: Learn how to canoe in the safe water body that is Oakland Lake. Urban Park Rangers will guide you through the basic motions to maneuver around the gentle waters in Alley Pond Park.
Where: Oakland Lake, Alley Pond Park, 47th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard
When: Sunday 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Neighborhood: Flushing
What: Macrame is a textile with roots in ancient Arabic weaving, which has become somewhat trendy in interior design today. But before you go Pinterest searching, appreciate the history and craft a bit more with this hands-on lesson. Learn about the woven art of Macrame, stemming from the Arabic weavers’ word “migramah” for “fringe,” and create some beautiful pieces for your own home design.

When: Sunday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

What: This snazzy '60s cover band will be playing old school hits along the beach.
