Here are the top stories today in Queens:
- A Queens man has plead guilty to manslaughter for shooting and killing a 21-year-old camp counselor in 2017. The victim was walking home from a nearby store when the defendant fired multiple shots, striking the young woman once in the head. Jonel Lattore, 38, will be sentenced on Dec. 6, and Justice Kenneth Holder has indicated he will be sentenced to 17 years in prison, to be followed by five years' post release supervision. (Press Release Desk)
- Christopher Ransom, the man charged in the 2019 friendly fire death of veteran NYPD detective Brian Simonsen, was sentenced on Wednesday to 33 years in prison, plus five years post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter and robbery. Simonsen was shot in the chest in Feb. 2019 as he and six other officers opened fire on Ransom during a robbery at a T-Mobile store in Queens' Richmond Hill neighborhood. Ransom waived his right to appeal during last month's plea hearing and answered affirmatively to questions asked by Judge Kenneth Holder in court. (NBC New York)
- Students and parents are fighting to reverse a decision after school administrators at the United Nations International School Queens campus announced it will be closing. The Queens campus of the school has been educating kindergartners through eighth graders for eight decades. If the campus closes, students instead will be bused an hour to the main campus in Manhattan. (WABC-TV)
- Some Queens residents still can't go home after Hurricane Ida and are being sent to new hotels. A Radisson Hotel near JFK Airport had become a home of sorts for more than a dozen of those families, all of whom were renters whose previous homes were destroyed. However, some tenants have rallied together after they got word last week that they will need to change hotels, with some going to Brooklyn, while others will head to Long Island City. A rep for the city said they are actively working to get 380 storm-impacted families permanent homes. (NBC New York)
- Commonpoint Queens will be hosting a free job fair in Forest Hills next month. Participants will have the chance to interface with 60 companies from all different job sectors who are currently hiring. This job fair will be held in-person at Commonpoint Central Queens site, 67-09 108th Street in Forest Hills. Proof of vaccination and masks are required.(Patch)
