Here are the top stories today in Queens:
- Fetty Wap was arrested during the Rolling Loud music festival at Citi Field in Queens this week on federal drug charges. The rapper has been linked to a major drug trafficking ring that allegedly dealt cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl throughout the New York metro area, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Fetty Wap, born Willie Junior Maxwell II, reportedly operated as a dealer for the trafficking organization. Five other people, including a New Jersey corrections officer, have been indicted in the federal charges. (Queens Patch)
- A 12-year-old boy was stabbed in the stomach by another 12-year-old boy Thursday during a Jamaica, Queens playground dispute. The boys were outside I.S. 8, The Emerson School, on 167th Street when an argument broke out between them. The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. The other boy is currently in police in custody. (Spectrum News NY1)
- A 23-year-old man was chased down and shot dead by a small mob of people in Queens last week. Joel Cobbs was chased by nearly a dozen men for several blocks around 163rd Street in Jamaica before someone from the group shot him in the head. Cobbs was pronounced dead from his injuries at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. Police are currently searching for suspects who were filmed by security camera footage during the chase. (FOX 5 NY)
- In the early hours of Thursday morning, a 21-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and critically injured while riding a bicycle at the intersection of Queens Plaza and Queens Boulevard. The area was closed down as crews worked at the scene, and the victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. - Nine years after Superstorm Sandy devastated New York, Congress members from Queens and Brooklyn are still calling for Jamaica Bay protections against future flooding. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requesting that already-approved funds be used on ecosystem restoration projects to benefit the Bay. Jeffries' letter emphasized that the Jamaica Bay area remains vulnerable to extreme weather events, citing the tragic deaths of 16 New Yorkers due to Hurricane Ida in August. (QNS.com)
