NYC Flight Departures Resume After Nationwide Outage

More than 750 flights were delayed at LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports after a massive FAA outage was fixed, according to FlightAware.

QUEENS — Flights at LaGuardia and JFK airports resumed Wednesday morning — albeit with hundreds of delays — after a nationwide Federal Aviation Administration outage was fixed, officials said.

The FAA announced the system failure about 8 a.m., leading to a ground stop for all inbound and outbound flights across the U.S.

The pause ended roughly an hour later, and JFK Airport and LaGuardia Airport announced they resumed departures about 9 a.m.

Departure and arrival delays both averaged about 1.5 hours, and all inbound flights to the airport were held at their origin until Wednesday at 10 a.m., FlightAware data showed.

JFK Airport had 239 delayed flights and 10 cancelations, according to FlightAware. Departure delays average one hour and 20 minutes, and were increasing, as of 10 a.m., FlightAware reported.

And Newark Liberty International Airport had 210 delays and 51 cancelations, FlightAware data shows.

The power outage comes after a brutal winter storm led to thousands of flight delays and cancelations in December.
