Here are the top three stories in Queens today:
- Queens DA Melinda Katz and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell shared the news of a grand jury indictment against five individuals. The individuals indicted were located in Queens, the Bronx and the State of Tennessee, and were arrested on Wednesday night in relation to the "Iron Pipeline," a major gun-trafficking operation in New York City. Officers recovered 182 firearms in the raid which took place in August 2021. (PIX11 New York News)
- Joe Crowley's cousin, Elizabeth Crowley, is being challenged by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez-backed candidate Kristen Gonzalez in a New York State Senate race. The seat covers Astoria, Greenpoint, LIC, and other nearby neighborhoods. The two candidates are battling in a crowded primary race for the Aug. 23 Democratic Senate primary race. (New York Post )
- The heat wave caused thousands of New Yorkers to lose power on Thursday, including more than 500 in Astoria. Con Edison asked tens of thousands of residents to limit their power usage early in the day on Thursday due to "equipment problems." There was a subsequent 8 percent voltage reduction during Con Edison's repairs which caused the outage. Services were restored by Thursday evening. (Spectrum News NY1)
