Here are the top stories in Queens today:
- Governor Hochul has announced the opening of the Long Island Rail Road Elmont Station, which is the first new LIRR station in almost 50 years. The station will be open for service beginning Nov. 20, initially offering eastbound service to the new home of the New York Islanders, UBS Arena, as well as nearby Belmont Park, which retains its own dedicated station. Service at the station will increase next summer when the westbound platform opens, at which time, the station will begin full-time year-round service to the local community and will begin to provide westbound service to and from events at UBS Arena and Belmont Park. - On Monday, the UJA-Federation of New York announced that it received a $10 million legacy gift from longtime New York-based philanthropists Jack and Shirley Silver. The donation will go toward helping New Yorkers out of poverty by funding the UJA’s anti-poverty initiative called Upward New York, which provides its clients with digital food pantries and two social services “hubs.” The Queens Hub, which will be renamed the Jack and Shirley Silver Hub, was opened in 2020 and has helped more than 5,000 people with food assistance, employment services for more than 550 individuals, financial guidance, and mental health counseling since it's inception. - The Port Authority is bringing in MTA and transit experts to reexamine a subway extension to LaGuardia Airport. The new panel of experts follows Gov. Hochul’s decision last month to put the brakes on former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to build an AirTrain to LaGuardia from Willets Point, Queens, due to criticism for the plans inefficiency and it's requiring mass transit riders to pay two fares to get to the airport. A proposal to extend the subway’s N/W line to the airport has gained some steam, which would add a spur to the elevated tracks in Astoria that turns north of the line’s 30th Ave. station before continuing over the Grand Central Parkway.(New York Daily News)
- A man allegedly threatened to burn down a kosher bagel shop in Queens because of Israeli flags displayed at the business. The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating after a man hurled hateful remarks at a 26-year-old worker and customers at Bagels & Co in Fresh Meadows last Wednesday. Police said the suspect filmed the outburst on his cellphone, and no injuries were reported. (New York Post)
- A 69-year-old Queens nurse vanished after going out for walk and his wife is riding on the no. 7 train to find him. Richard “Max” Albright, a registered nurse at the Hospital for Special Surgery, went missing more than a month ago, on Thursday morning, Oct. 14. Surveillance from the lobby of their building on Junction Boulevard showed Cathy Albright's husband shuffling a bit as he left the lobby, but he never came back. (WPIX 11 New York)

- Queens Borough President Donovan Richards: "Our classrooms are full of future leaders who will guide Queens forward, and it was an honor to launch our Civics in the Classroom initiative today at Bayside High School to connect with these trailblazers of tomorrow about the importance of getting engaged in their communities.
Each week, we’ll be visiting a different Queens high school to spread the word about who our leaders are, what they do and how critical it is — as movement-leading young people have shown across the nation in recent years — to be a part of the process. See you all soon." (Facebook) - Queens, New York: "MoMA PS1 + Studio Museum open the annual artist-in-residence show "(Never) as I Was" tomorrow. It runs until Feb. 27.
