Here are the top stories in Queens today:

  1. Mobile sports betting is coming to New York after the state formally announced last Monday that two licenses would be granted by the New York State Gaming Commission to offer online gambling on nine different websites. The first winning bid went to Caesars Sportsbook and Wynn Interactive, teamed with Resorts World and Rush Street. Sen. Joe Addabbo Jr., who chairs the Senate’s Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee, has said he hopes to get a full casino license for Resorts World Casino in South Ozone Park by 2023. (Queens Chronicle)
  2. Renderings have revealed a proposed mixed-use property at 146-93 Guy R. Brewer Boulevard in Springfield Gardens, Queens. The zoning map and text amendments that would permit the construction of a mixed-use residential property must be approved by The Department of City Planning, as the proposal exceeds the property's currently allowable density and use-type. If approved, Ranbir LLC, the developer responsible for the project, expects the building to be completed by 2024 following an environmental review and an 18-month Uniform Land Use Review Procedure process. (New York YIMBY)
  3. A 45-year-old man was stabbed after a tiff over a game of pool turned violent at a Queens sports bar on Sunday. The stabbing occurred at Sagitarios Sports Bar on the corner of Jamaica Ave. and 139th St. in Jamaica, after two men got into a disagreement over the game. The assailant first threw a pool ball at the victim, then stepped away before coming back and stabbing him in the stomach. The victim was taken to Jamaica Hospital and is expected to recover. (MSN)
  4. Negligence from the MTA may have allowed the Access-A-Ride fraud to go undetected. An audit released Monday by MTA Inspector General Carolyn Pokorny's office found Access-A-Ride contractor Curb Mobility, which provides on-demand rides to New Yorkers with disabilities, failed to enact specific fraud-detection strategies requested by MTA officials in 2018. Curb Mobility currently handles 95 percent of the Access-A-Ride “e-hail” trips, according to the IG — but its contract with the MTA terminates at the end of this year. The IG recommended the MTA put fraud detection requirements in any future e-hail contracts. (New York Post)
  5. A Queens teacher was allowed to go back to school after a report detailed alleged grooming and sex with an ex-student. The Special Commissioner of Investigation, an independent monitor of city schools, contended Townsend Harris High School English teacher Joseph Canzoneri engaged in numerous inappropriate acts with female students — from “flirtatious” text messages to sex with one young woman shortly after she graduated. Canzoneri was removed from the school during the SCI investigation, but returned this past Sept. after he was cleared in a trial known as a 3020-a proceeding, which is required by state law for tenured educators. He was not allowed to teach or work with students.
