- A global bubble tea chain, Moge Tee, has opened a Sunnyside location, marking its eighth store in Queens and sixteenth in New York City. The new location, at 45-18 Queens Boulevard, is taking over the space once occupied by Kase Studio, next door to Alpha Donuts. According to Dike Yu, who is a co-owner of the Sunnyside location and is originally from China, the Queens Boulevard location was chosen because there is a lack of bubble tea shops in the area. (Astoria Post)
- One day after battling a fire in Queens, a firefighter from Long Island has died, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. 33-year-old Jesse Gerhard of Long Beach battled a fire at a home on the corner of Beach Channel Drive and Hartman Lane at around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The acting FDNY commissioner said Gerhard suffered a "medical episode" the following night at the firehouse while on duty at Ladder Company 134 in Far Rockaway and died at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. (News 12 Brooklyn)
- Many Queens residents and government officials are angry after seeing price hikes on their Con Edison electric bills. Between Dec. and Jan., many residents saw their electric bills double or even triple. Con Ed attributes the price increase to “the supply cost of energy, and particularly the increased cost of natural gas,” however few residents seem to be satisfied with that explanation.
