ICYMI: Mr. Met Fired After Giving Fan The Finger: Video

The mascot lost his cool after a 7-1 loss and flipped the bird to fans.

FLUSHING, QUEENS — The Mets' losing streak has their mascot losing his cool. Mr. Met flipped the bird at his fans Wednesday night as he walked off CitiField after seeing his boys take a 7-to-1 beating at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers.

It's unknown what was said to the usually jovial character, but his obscene tantrum was caught on video. And it cost the baseball-headed guy his job.

A video tweeted by a fan who calls himself Tony T shows the middle finger being hoisted. Tony T later said he hadn't provoked the rude gesture. "Literally was with my friends and we didn't even say a word, just reaching over for a high five. Listen to the video," he said in a different thread.

The flip quickly went viral on Twitter. Some said Mr. Met's gesture represented how every fan felt.

Others argued that Mr. Met is physiologically incapable of flipping anyone off.

But The Mets immediately followed through with an apology on Twitter.

The team later told the Associated Press that multiple people wear the Mr. Met uniform throughout the season and that "the person who donned it Wednesday night will not do so again."

The Mets have had their share of bad publicity this May. Matt Harvey was suspended for three games after failing to show up at CitiField following a bender the night before. The team also had to delete a tweet showing a sex toy in Kevin Plawecki's locker.
