Here are the top three stories in Queens today:
- Several public schools within State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr.'s district will receive funding through State and Municipal Grants. Each school earmarked will receive $250,000 for renovation projects. Projects include tech upgrades at Raymond York in Ozone Park, bathroom renovations at Anthony Pranzo School in Glendale, and an auditorium conversion at Horace Mann School. The funding is still pending final approval from the state. (Politics NY)
- The turf field at Brookville Park has been completed seven months ahead of schedule. The $3 million project is the site where the Rosedale Jets youth football team practices and plays. The field will host activities including football, soccer, baseball, and lacrosse. Queens Borough Parks Commissioner Michael Dockett touted the early completion as a great success for the Parks department. (QNS.com)
- A man was handcuffed and arrested for swimming at Rockaway Beach after hours. Andres Velasquez, 33, was swimming when a whistle was blown, which he believed was a "swim at your own risk" signal. Instead, a group of police officers greeted Velasquez at the beach, handcuffed him, and led him away, explaining that swimming wasn't allowed after 6:00 p.m. This is 2022's first arrest for swimming after-hours at the Rockaways. Police say that he was arrested for failure to produce an ID, not for swimming after hours. (The New York Times)
