Here are the top three stories today in Queens:

  1. Thieves posing as NYC tourists swiped an 87-year-old man's necklace in a Queens park. According to police, the theft happened on Jun. 16 near Cunningham Park in Queens when the tourists engaged the man in conversation to draw him closer to their vehicle, then swiped his necklace and swapped it for one made of fake gold. At the time of this writing, no arrests have been made. However, police are investigating the thefts as grand larcenies, indicating that the stolen necklace was worth more than $1,000. (NBC New York)
  2. On Thursday, a new dog run officially opened in Travers Park after years of local advocacy. The new run, the first to open in the heart of Jackson Heights, is free to enter and comes in response to a surge in dog ownership. The new dog run is located near the handball courts on 77th Street, in an area that the Parks Dept. describes as a multi-play space. (Queens Post)
  3. The Queens man who was found rotting under a couch was murdered, according to police. The body was discovered by officers on Wednesday inside an apartment on Jamaica Avenue near 77th Street in Woodhaven. Police say the man was stabbed to death, and believe he had been dead for weeks because of the condition of the corpse. (New York Post)
