Here are the top three stories today in Queens:

  1. Three were injured when a transformer exploded at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The three were injured with "major burns" according to fire officials. The explosion happened around 1:40 p.m. at the Flushing Meadows tennis center near Meridian Road according to FDNY. As of Monday evening, there is no word on the cause of the explosion. (Patch)
  2. COVID-19 cases are down by 15 percent in New York State. However, hospitalizations and deaths are up in the aftermath of the latest BA.5 wave. Last week, 44,235 cases were reported in New York. That's down from 52,115 the previous week. However, the number of hospitalizations increased by about 25 percent. (The Journal News)
  3. A law passed in June granted NYC the power to keep speed cameras active 24 hours a day. Starting yesterday, that's just what the city decided to do. That means that all of the speed cameras around town will watch for drivers going 10 miles per hour over the speed limit all the time. Before this, the cameras would monitor streets from 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. on weekdays. (Gothamist)
