Here are the top three stories in Queens today:
- The U.S. Open will let players from Russia and Belarus compete in Queens. On Tuesday, the U.S. Tennis Association said that they would not hold athletes from both Russia and Belarus “accountable for the actions and decisions of their governments” in the wake of Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine. In contrast, Wimbledon has barred Russians and Belarusians from competing at the fabled All England Club when the grass-court Grand Slam event kicks off at the end of June because of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The current men’s No. 1, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, will be able to defend his crown at Flushing Meadows. (New York Daily News)
- Jamaica Hospital Medical Center has partnered with three leading southeast Queens organizations to combat gun violence in communities. On Jun. 13, the founders of King of Kings Foundation, Life Camp, and Sheltering Arms Children and Family Services-Rock Safe Streets each signed a landmark agreement with Jamaica Hospital to work together to prevent violence and assist in protecting the health of patients and community members. The collaboration comes amid Gun Violence Awareness Month. "As a hospital that operates the busiest Level 1 Trauma Center in the city and cares for a disproportionately large number of gun violence patients, we know firsthand the impact and ripple effects it causes to victims, their loved ones, and communities,” Bruce Flanz, Jamaica Hospital president and CEO, said of the partnership. - A Queens blood drive was held yesterday, Jun. 14, at Queens Borough Hall in honor of World Blood Donor Day. The blood drive was held to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood — according to the New York Blood Center, the blood supply only stands at a three-day level. According to NYBC, it only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save multiple lives. To schedule a donation, click here. (WABC-TV)
