Here are the top stories today in Queens:
- A man was attacked with a metal pipe in a violent robbery while on his way to work in Queens. The attacker has been described as 5 feet, 8 inches tall and approximately 150 pounds. Police said the suspect demanded the 65-year-old victim’s wallet and allegedly hit him over the head with the pipe when he refused, then stole his cell phone before taking off. The robbery happened on Nov. 11 around 6:30 a.m. at 142nd Street between 106th and 107th avenues. (CBS New York)
- A Westchester man was caught by TSA with a .22 caliber loaded handgun at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday. TSA agents alerted the Port Authority Police, who responded to the checkpoint, confiscated the gun, and arrested the man, who is a resident of Tuckahoe, on weapons charges. According to TSA, since the beginning of 2021, nine firearms were recovered at JFK Airport. (WPIX 11 New York)
- The Queens Center Mall food court is getting a new Burmese restaurant. Food vendor Burmese Bites, a mainstay at the Queens Night Market, has expanded into a permanent restaurant at the Queens Center Mall food court. Their offerings range from palata dishes, to tea leaf salad, and to shan kaukswe, with rice noodles, ground chicken, and peanuts. (Eater NY)
- A Queens man was sentenced for making violent threats online to assassinate Democratic officials in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. 37-year-old Brendan Hunt, of Ridgewood, was found guilty of his crimes in April 2021, which was the first trial to address the consequences of the assault on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He has been sentenced to serve 19 months in prison. (amNY)
- Local lawmakers are denouncing the recent anti-Semitic threats that were made against Bagels and Company, a bagel shop in Fresh Meadows. The two men who confronted the suspect were honored for their bravery. Police are still searching for the man who made the threats and the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating. (WABC-TV)
