Record Heat, Thunderstorms Heading for Long Island

High humidity, possible record setting temperatures, and thunderstorms are due on LI this week. Here's the full forecast.

This week might be a record setter as high temperatures clash with humidity and bring thunderstorms later in the week.

Monday will be more miserable than usual as temperatures hit their peak for the week. While the thermometer will read 92 degrees, humidity will push the head index past 97 degrees in some areas of the island.

Unrelenting humidity and high temperatures will hold the heat index high, which could become dangerous for more vulnerable residents. Officials ask neighbors to check on the elderly or disabled.

Thunderstorms are set to roll in Tuesday night but won’t provide much of a break from the humidity Wednesday.

With the heat comes poor air quality, which residents with respiratory or heart problems are advised to avoid. Strenuous activity should be avoided by both humans and pets when outdoors.

Here’s the forecast, according to the National Weather Service:

Monday: Sunny and hot, with a high near 90. South wind 6 to 11 mph.

Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. South wind 6 to 11 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 88. South wind 6 to 11 mph.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 87.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
