This soundsΒ Β truly amazing,Β Β Β but theΒ Β truly phenomenalΒ Β qualitiesΒ Β of the classΒ Β can be foundΒ Β from their personal achievements and acts of compassion toward others.
Aesop the ancient Greek story teller is quoted as saying βNo act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wastedβ.
The Class of 2013 has demonstratedΒ Β many opportunities in which theyΒ Β haveΒ shownΒ Β Β kindnessΒ Β as they haveΒ Β put the welfare ofΒ Β others beforeΒ Β themselves.Β The Class is symbolized by being a compassionate class.Β
The Class of 2013 lost a member of their class,Β Β Jarid Amico, and I am proud of theirΒ Β efforts toΒ continue toΒ honor his memory.
One member of this class has committed countless hours to the Adaptive Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization that worksΒ Β with adults andΒ Β Β Β childrenΒ Β with physical and cognitive disabilities.Β Jason Chen, a highly accomplishedΒ Β and medal winning skier,Β Β has spent daysΒ during the last two years,Β Β Β teachingΒ Β Β skiing through theΒ Β Β Adaptive Sports program.Β Β Β Β One ofΒ Β Jasonβs charges,Β Β Β a 9 year old autisticΒ Β boy,Β Β wentΒ Β Β from barely making it down the hill to skiing independentlyΒ Β thanks to Jason.Β Β Β Β Will Jason Chen pleaseΒ Β Β Β stand and beΒ Β recognized.Β
Two of the seniors discovered that through their new club, Friends of Prajwala,Β Β they were ableΒ Β Β to bringΒ Β the hidden topic ofΒ Β Β humanΒ Β trafficking toΒ Β Β Β Β Β Β Β theΒ Β Β attention of others.Β The group presentedΒ Β Β programsΒ Β Β to members of theΒ Β high schoolΒ Β and the community regarding the atrocitiesΒ Β Β associated with human trafficking and preventive measures.Β Thank you to NatalieΒ Β Amstutz and Heather Schindler for their actions towards enlightening the restΒ of us to thisΒ Β travesty.Β Will Heather and Natalie please stand andΒ Β Β be recognized.Β
Many students haveΒ Β participated in clubsΒ Β Β helping thoseΒ Β in need in variousΒ Β foreign countries.Β In additionΒ Β Β Β Β Β to those commitments,Β Β Β one young manΒ Β recognized thatΒ Β Β we have acute need in our own local communities.Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Aid for AmericaΒ Β has offered assistance and gift cardsΒ Β Β during theΒ Β Β holidayΒ seasonΒ to the Carver CenterΒ Β in Port Chester.Β Michael Beveridge,Β Β please stand and be recognized.

Senior year for the class of 2013 presented many challenges.Β Our community was devastated byΒ Β Hurricane Sandy.Β Seniors were in theΒ Β Β midst ofΒ Β Β Β Β Β Β Β their college applications and yetΒ Β theyΒ Β unselfishly shared timeΒ Β and energy to reachΒ Β out to others.Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β
The seniors demonstrated selfless behavior as theyΒ Β ledΒ Β Β others in the schoolΒ Β forΒ Β Β Β the Holiday Toy Drive for youngsters in the distressed Breezy Point area.
They participated in makingΒ Β Snowflakes for the Β Β new elementaryΒ school that opened in Sandy Hook, CT.Β
Members of this class began a peer tutoring program during finals to assist underclassmen as they prepared for their end of the year exams.
Members of theΒ Β Class of 2013Β Β haveΒ Β Β accumulated 35,210 hours ofΒ Β Β community service.Β That represents an averageΒ Β of 161Β Β hours per senior.
The Class of 2013Β Β Β woreΒ tee shirtsΒ with theΒ Β quoteΒ Β Β Β Β Β Β Β β Who Says 13 is unlucky?βΒ Β Β Students wereΒ oftenΒ Β heardΒ Β commentingΒ Β thatΒ they were notΒ Β asΒ intellectualΒ Β as other classesΒ β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦β¦.Β Β That they were not as well liked as other classesβ¦β¦..Β Β That the weather would purposely not cooperateΒ (that might not be so farfetched)Β Β Β But alsoΒ Β Β That they were not as organized as other classes.Β Β Β Β Β Β Well,Β Β Β it seems to me thatΒ Β Β this hasΒ Β Β been a luckyΒ class.Β
They might have struggled with aborted senior pranks, and for that I am personally grateful.Β
It wasnβt thatΒ Β they didnβtΒ Β want a senior cut day,Β Β Β Β I like toΒ Β believe they couldnβt tear themselvesΒ Β awayΒ Β from theirΒ educational and extracurricularΒ Β commitments.
No,Β this isΒ Β Β not anΒ Β unlucky class.Β Β ThisΒ is aΒ Β very special group ofΒ Β young menΒ and womenΒ Β that haveΒ Β touched theΒ Β heartsΒ Β Β and souls of many.Β Β Β TheyΒ Β have achieved throughΒ Β theirΒ Β confidenceΒ Β and commitment.
Every aspect of theΒ Β Β greater Rye community hasΒ Β Β been touched andΒ Β Β enriched byΒ Β the Class of 2013.
Congratulations to the parents for theirΒ Β admirable task of raising suchΒ Β Β Β talented,Β Β courteous,Β Β compassionate and civic mindedΒ Β young men and women.
Β Β Β I am fortunate andΒ Β proud to haveΒ Β shared the last two Β yearsΒ Β with the Class of 2013.
Mrs. Slack,Β Β Β it is with respect and admiration for this class thatΒ Β on behalf of the facultyΒ and fellow administratorsΒ Β Β I attest to the factΒ Β that these young men and women haveΒ Β metΒ Β all the requirements for graduation from Rye High School.
It is withΒ Β enormousΒ Β pride that IΒ Β Β present the lucky Β Class of 2013.
