Remembering Rye's Lost Loved Ones on 9/11

The Rye gazebo stands as a memorial to the 14 Rye residents who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

Two years ago, the Rye 9/11 Memorial Committee unveiled the 9/11 Memorial gazebo, of planning and debate. Today, 11 years after the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, the gazebo stands on Rye’s Village Green as a memorial for family members and friends to visit and remember their lost loved ones.

The gazebo features the signatures of each of Rye’s 14 9/11 victims beneath the circular railing in the gazebo interior:Β Sean O’Neill, Tommy Palazzo, George Morell, Teddy Maloney, Christopher Mello, Ward Haynes, Thomas Crotty, Benjamin Fisher, Yugi Goya, Takashi Kinoshita, Gary Kocheler, Francis McGuinn, Michael Simon and Allan Upton.

At the unveiling on June 6, 2010, Steve Otis, who was the mayor of Rye during the gazebo process said: β€œIn this place and at this time, it is fitting that we bring together part of Rye’s past with this historic gazebo. It is especially meaningful that we join the personal celebration of the lives of our friends with the history of Rye, our past, our present and our future. Today we dedicate this memorial to honor, remember, and express our love for what they mean to us and what they mean to Rye.”
