Rye Small Business Spotlight: Crisfield's Prime Meat

Our small business series shines a light on local business owners in the community.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind this exciting series — to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

How did you come up with name?

Crisfield’s has been in business for over 100 years. It was previously named “Fremd’s Market” after Theodore Fremd, who also has a street in Rye named after him. Fremd was a German immigrant who founded what became Crisfield’s. Robert Crisfield apprentice for Mr. Fremd and eventually bought the business, and changed the name. John and Jackie Johnston bought the business in the 1970s and wanted to maintain the Crisfield/Fremd legacy.

Why start a business in this town?

Rye is the best town in America for a specialty shop. You have a well-informed community who appreciate premium products, especially as it pertains to food.

What business are you in?

We are in the meat and deli business. We specialize in the highest quality prime and organic meats. We are one of the few remaining true butcher shops in the area. We also have a full-service deli with delicious sandwiches, homemade cold cuts, and gourmet sides.

What is the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?

The popularity of the food business has led to an increase in competition. We like to think that all of our customers are entirely loyal, but sometimes the temptation to pick up meat at a supermarket is too high, despite the questionable quality of their product & lack of expertise.

What has been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?

Staying in business for about 40 years and continuing the legacy of previous owners is, in itself, a huge accomplishment of which we are very proud.

How does your business give back to the community?

Crisfield’s is an institution in Rye. We have many 3rd and 4th generation customers. Being the town butcher is our pleasure, and we demonstrate our appreciation by giving back. We regularly donate gift cards and filet roasts to charitable foundations (probably a dozen times a year). To name a few, Rye Presbyterian Schools, Resurrection Schools, Holy Child School, Rye Public School, the Rye Historical Society and American Yacht Club. We are also give back by being open 364 days a year.
