Unlicensed Driver Nabbed Behind Wheel Of Car With Stolen License Plates: Police

The Queens man in the 2007 VW Rabbit was pulled over after a license plate reader alerted that the plates were reported stolen by NYPD.

CITY OF RYE, NY — A high-tech police tool helped an unlicensed driver's attempt to avoid detection, according to police in Westchester.

The City of Rye Police Department says that 27-year-old Oscar Magallanes, of College Point, was arrested on Thursday while driving a vehicle with a stolen license plate.

Through the use of license plate readers, police were able to find and identify a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit traveling with the stolen license plate on Midland Ave., as it was entering I-287 West.

After a traffic stop, police discovered the license plate was reported stolen to the NYPD Property Crimes Unit on September 4.

Police arrested Magallanes for fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.

He was released on his own recognizance and is due back in Rye City Court on October 14.
