Location:
Caumsett State Historic Park
25 Lloyd Harbor Rd
Huntington, NY 11743
Purpose: To bring together photographers and those who enjoy walking outside and/or learning more about photography, for a pleasurable morning at a state park with a colorful history and an extensive trail network. In 1921 Marshall Field III purchased 1750 acres of Lloyd Neck to create one large estate. He named the land after its Matinecock Indian name, Caumsett, which means "place by the sharp rock." Field created a self-sufficient English-style estate as a combination of hunting preserve, and home, complete with its own water and electrical supply. When the estate was finished, it had facilities for every sport except golf. Caumsett today has acres of woodland, meadows, shoreline and salt marsh, and is renowned for bird watching, photography and nature study.

Facilities that share the site include the Lloyd Harbor Equestrian Center, the Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education Program in the summer cottage, and the Volunteers for Wildlife Hospital and Education Center in the "Calf Barn" of the park's Dairy Complex which provides rehabilitation and hospitalization for Long Island's injured wildlife. The historic Henry Lloyd Manor house built in 1711 is leased to the Lloyd Harbor Historical Society.

Suggestions: Dress for the weather - Lloyd Neck juts far into Long Island Sound and is often windy. We will be walking a fair distance and suggest that participants wear sturdy walking shoes. Be selective with photography equipment, since overloaded photographers will have trouble keeping up with the group.
