Blizzard Warning For Suffolk County: What It Means

Whiteout conditions are likely with wind gusts up to 60 mph lashing the county Saturday.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A rare blizzard warning has been issued for Suffolk County with wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy snow causing whiteout conditions at times Saturday, the National Weather Service says.

The blizzard warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday. The warning means blizzard conditions (low visibility of less than a quarter-mile mile due to falling and/or blowing snow, and winds at least 35 mph) are expected for at least three hours.

"Travel should be restricted to emergencies only," the blizzard warning says.

Blizzard conditions are expected Saturday morning into the early afternoon in Suffolk, the weather service says. More than a foot of snow – up to 3 inches per hour – is likely to accumulate before the storm ends Saturday night.

Minor to moderate flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline Saturday morning.
