First Grade Students Make Create Real-Life Mitten Tree Fundraiser
The Nokomos Elementary School fundraiser was inspired by a book and benefited a local homeless shelter.

Holbrook, NY —First graders at Nokomis Elementary School were inspired by a book to give back to their community in December. Students at the Sachem Central School District school read "The Mitten Tree" and created a project to collect hats, scarves, gloves and mittens to donate to a homeless shelter in Ronkonkoma.
The first grade students developed their own fundraising campaign, creating announcements and visiting classrooms to share the idea with other students. They created their own mitten tree with the donations, which they then donated to the shelter.
