'The Goonies' Kicks Off Suffolk's 2nd Round Of Movie Nights

The series begins Friday with a showing of the '80s classic at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park; "Elf" follows Sept. 3 at Gardiner County Park.

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — If you thought the last of Suffolk’s free movie nights played out at Smith Point County Park this summer, "The Goonies" will show you that’s not good enough.

Get your lawn chairs out.

The county is planning a second round of movie nights — dubbed the Community Movie Night Series — under the stars and on the lawns of Lake Ronkonkoma County Park, Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore, and the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport.

The series includes six family-friendly movies on Friday and Saturday nights, kicking off with the the 1985 classic, “The Goonies,” this Friday at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park. The movie tells the tale of a group of kids who discover a treasure map and hope to save their neighborhood. The title track "Goonies 'R' Good Enough" was one of Cyndi Lauper's first hits.

County Executive Steve Bellone said the series will showcase “iconic films that residents of all ages will enjoy.”

“There is no better way to spend time with family and friends than enjoying a movie under the stars” at one of the county’s parks,” Bellone said.

Upcoming movies:

  • "The Goonies" - Friday at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park
  • "Elf" – Sept. 3 at Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore
  • "Matilda" - Sept. 17 at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park
  • "Back to the Future" – Sept. 18 at The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium in Centerport
  • "The Wizard of Oz" – Sept. 24 at Gardiner County Park in Bay Shore
  • "The Addams Family" – Sept. 25 at Lake Ronkonkoma County Park

Entrance to the community movie nights begins at 6 p.m, and movies will start at sunset. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, beverages, and snacks. Seating is available on a first-come basis.

The county has partnered with the Reclaim Our Water initiative, the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation, the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan, Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center, and the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium to present the movie series.
