Ronkonkoma Beach Closed To Swimming Because Of Bacteria

Swimming in bacteria can cause illnesses and infections, according to the Suffolk County health commissioner.

RONKONKOMA, NY — Ronkonkoma Beach in the Town of Islip is closed to swimming because of a high level of bacteria found in the water, Suffolk health officials said Thursday.

Swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, said Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott.

The beach will reopen when the level of bacteria decreases to a safe level, the county said.
