HOLBROOK, NY — A developer says Whole Foods Market and Starbucks have been proposed as tenants at the near-empty Sun Vet Mall in Holbrook, Newsday reported.

A site plan filed with the Town of Islip for the redevelopment of the mall, but the Blumenfeld Development Group LLC has maintained that there is no agreement in place for the grocer to open a store at the mall, only saying it is one of several grocers there has been discussions with, according to the outlet.

A Starbucks with two drive-thrus has also been proposed for the mall, an attorney for Blumenfeld said at an Islip planning board meeting on Wednesday, but the company would not confirm any interest, Newsday reported.

The mall was once bustling with activity with a bevy of varied stores and restaurants that included a diner, a pizzeria, a discount store, several women's clothing stores, some medical offices, and an area with amusements for children.

Only four tenants remain there now, including Red Wing shoe store, Citibank, Closeouts and Liquidations, and Sun Vet Wines and Liquors.

The 18-acre mall, which was built in 1973, has been losing tenants for years, including its anchors, a roughly 10,000-square-foot Toys R Us store, and a 60,000-square-foot Pathmark supermarket which both closed after filing bankruptcy years ago, Newsday reported.
