Board of Ed to Decide February Vacation Fate Tuesday Night

The Board of Education will vote on a resolution to revise the Smithtown Central School District calendar Tuesday night, which would use four of the February vacation days to make up for those missed in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Superintendent Anthony Annunziato said the days missed could be made up Tuesday through Friday during the February break.

The superintendent also said there is no other time to make up for the days lost.

"The March vacation days are there in the event that we have more than two snow days," he said. "If I went into March and we use more than two snow days I would end up going to the state and asking for a waiver and they would ask me, 'why didn't we use February? You didn't use any of your vacation days.'"

During the Nov. 13 board meeting, while word was spreading of possible legislation that would allow for school districts to reduce the school year no more than 10 days due to Hurricane Sandy, the superintendent said since no legislation had been passed yet that the district would still have a full 180-day school year.
