Canine Found In Smithtown Dies Of 'Severe Injuries,' $3K Reward Offered: Suffolk SPCA

The dog, Meatloaf, was found with chemical burns and infected wounds, the Suffolk SPCA says. He succumbed to his injuries.

SMITHTOWN, NY — A dog has died of "severe injuries" after it had been found in Smithtown in November, and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $3K reward for information that leads to an arrest, the agency announced.

A male bully mix with brindle coloring was brought to the Smithtown Animal Shelter with "extensive injuries" on Nov. 5. The dog, named "Meatloaf" by the shelter staff, was suffering from what appeared to be chemical burns and infected wounds, the Suffolk SPCA stated. Meatloaf was found wandering on Croft Lane near Creek Road in Smithtown.

A good Samaritan discovered the injured dog and brought him to the Smithtown Animal Shelter for care.

"Unfortunately, Meatloaf's injuries were too extreme, so he did not survive," the Suffolk SPCA stated. "The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a $3K reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for this heinous act of animal cruelty."

SPCA detectives are actively investigating this case. They urge anyone with information about Meatloaf’s injuries or the circumstances that led to his condition and, ultimately, his death, to come forward.

Those with information may contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. Reports can be made anonymously.

"The Suffolk County SPCA reminds the public that intentional harm to animals is against the law in New York," the agency stated. "Together, we can ensure that justice is served and prevent further acts of cruelty against animals in our community."

Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, said animal cruelty will not be tolerated in Suffolk County.

"If you witness any act of animal cruelty or neglect, please report it immediately to the Suffolk County SPCA," Gross said. "Together, we can ensure justice for these innocent animals."
