Smithtown Notebook: Hoyt Farm Gets Grant, Nesconset Library Hosts Grand Opening

Branches of the town are also set to host meetings on Tuesday.

Hoyt Farm Receives $15,000 to Clean Up Water, Build Well

Commack’s received a state grant to construct a well and supply natural and non-chlorinated water to the man-made pond.

“The pond hosts a myriad of wildlife, both aquatic and plant wildlife and migratory birds as well,” said Director of Town Parks Charles Barrett. “Putting in the well will ensure that the water in the pond is just natural groundwater.”

The pond is currently filled by water from the Suffolk County Water Authority, and according to Barrett, the $15,000 grant will go towards building a well that will maintain pond water levels. The well is also designed to eliminate chemicals and unnatural substances.

The pond is now used as a visual tool for various environmental and wildlife classes that take place on the preserve, which also hosts a , , and .

Nesconset Branch of the Smithtown Special Library District has Grand Opening

The Nesconset branch of the Smithtown Special Library District was officially introduced to the community Wednesday morning with a grand opening ceremony.

Attendees included government officials Legis. John Kennedy Jr., R-Nesconset, and Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick, R- Smithtown, as well as Library Director Robert Lusak and members of the Library Board of Trustees.

"I would like to thank the residents of Smithtown, especially here in Nesconset, for all your support during this construction project. Because of you, we have been able to renovate every square inch of this building to better serve the community," Lusak said to the residents attending the ceremony.

To get the building to where it is now, 15 months of construction and renovations took place, work that resulted in a two-story main area containing the stacks with an attached smaller woodlands-themed children's department, computer desks, quiet rooms for study and a community room for resident's to host meetings and much more.



Upcoming Town Meetings

While there hasn’t been a town board meeting in weeks, the board will hold a meeting Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Town Hall. Also on Tuesday is the Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, held at the Eugene A. Cannataro Smithtown Senior Citizen Center at 7 p.m.
